The module addresses the complex array of organisational and human issues that need to be balanced when supervising and managing front-line staff.
This module is relevant for professionals involved in supervising staff within health and social services organisations, whether new to their role or more experienced, and is appropriate for supervisors working in statutory, independent and third sector settings.
Entrance requirements
Working in a third sector, local authority or health organisation in a health and social care role and involved in delivering professional supervision.
English language requirements
If English is not your first language you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your English language skills:
- IELTS Academic or UKVI 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each sub-skill.
- Pearson Test of English (Academic) 62 overall with 60 in each sub-skill.
- IBT TOEFL 80 overall with 18 in reading, 23 in writing, 19 in listening and 21 in speaking.

Objectives
On successful completion of the module, you should be able to:
- evaluate a range of theories and models of professional supervision;
- critically analyse your supervisory practice, including your influence on power dynamics and diversity;
- recognise the emotional impact of practice and appraise the role of supervision in supporting the wellbeing of staff and people who use services;
- evidence skills in enabling others to analyse, problem-solve and make decisions in situations of complexity, risk and uncertainty.
Structure and content
During your studies, you’ll explore the following:
- The theory underpinning effective supervision in the helping professions and the role played by professional supervision in improving outcomes for people who use services.
- Your own supervisory practice and your ability to respond to the needs of practitioners with differing levels of experience and working in different practice environments.
Time-commitment:
Advise 5-10 hours per week of study plus application of learning in practice.
Delivery and assessment
The module is structured around direct teaching, seminar discussion, small group activities and self-directed learning.
Throughout, you’ll be expected to work together with peers to debate practice dilemmas and challenges and to bring relevant examples from your work context and management experience where appropriate.
Teaching is online only, but a face-to-face date may be added with notice given.
