Stirling Cares Programme

Supporting Widening Access Students

The Stirling Cares Programme addresses challenges faced by widening access students that can discourage them from fully engaging with services and employers during their studies. The programme weaves together tailored careers education and practical work experience. The aim of the programme is to deliver enhanced careers support, develop confidence, and provide valuable work experience to increase social capital.

Who are Widening Access Students?

  • from a priority postcode area;
  • care experienced, estranged or carer;
  • refugee or asylum seeker;
  • from the armed forces community;
  • a student on the University of Stirling Access to Degree Studies Programme;
  • a student on a SWAP access course (Scottish Wider Access Programme).

How to get involved

We are looking for students to gain insight into sectors they are interested in working in, this could be Public, Private or Third Sector.

Organisations can support this programme in 2026 by offering:

  • A two-day work experience and/or work shadowing opportunity between May and June 2026.

Students may undertake a short project during their work experience to help support your business needs or simply shadowing the day-to-day activities of the organisations. Examples of projects that students have undertaken in the past include desk-based research, evaluation, creation of social media content, and support with policy making and bid-writing.

No costs will be incurred by partnering organisations as students will be supported by a grant.

If this is something you would like to support, contact us at employers@stir.ac.uk.
