Practical teaching opportunities were really beneficial
I first decided to study the MSc TESOL at Stirling because of the practical opportunities it offered me to develop further as an English tutor for adults. As someone who did not have much prior teacher training, I wanted to learn more and receive feedback on my teaching skills.
In my first semester, I learned about various theories and underlying concepts of teaching. During my second semester, I had the opportunity to conduct teaching practice through the Microteaching module. I also did a teaching placement at the Stirling School of English.
Fantastic TESOL experience in Türkiye
The most challenging yet rewarding part of my MSc TESOL journey was undertaking the Teaching Portfolio module. As part of this module, I travelled to Izmir, Türkiye for one month to be enrolled in a Cambridge CELTA course.
Being a non-Turkish speaker in a foreign environment where English is not widely spoken, really challenged me to use my skills and creativity in teaching English to A2 and B2 learners with whom I do not share a common first language. It also developed my empathy towards learners who struggle in learning a new language. Upon completing the Teaching Portfolio, I was able to reflect on the kind of teacher I would like to be in the future.
Supportive and encouraging TESOL tutors at Stirling
Throughout my time at Stirling I have greatly appreciated the tutors' openness and encouragement in embracing my own unique identity and interests. The tutors, along with the wider university and neighbouring communities, have made me feel seen and safe, despite being 10,000 km away from home.
In just one short year, Stirling has truly become my home away from home. Because of this, I am now staying for another four years as I work towards a TESOL PhD at the University of Stirling.
