Jenny is currently studying the Social Work pathway on the Doctorate of Applied Social Research at Stirling. Hear about her experience so far as postgraduate student.

A joy getting back to studying

The first stage of my studies has been the Child Welfare and Protection taught postgraduate course. The course has been all I’d hoped for. The quality of teaching and clarity of all the materials and guidance has made it a joy to come back to studying. The chance to read widely and to meet and share ideas and such a wide range of practice experience with other students and with such engaged and supportive teaching staff has been fantastic.

It's been a real highlight to have the cumulative experience of coming back into studying after a career in practice. My initial reservations about juggling work and family life with studying have been quelled. I’m settling in for the duration as a part-time student for some time to come!

It’s early to comment on how the course might influence my work but I can already see how the chance to take a critical distance will be so valuable. I’m looking forward to seeing what difference that might make.

Discovering student life

I’d often heard about the MacRobert Art Centre but had never been in, despite living not too far from Stirling. So it’s been great to discover such a great arts hub on campus. That and having a student card again in my 50s is great!

My advice to future students

To anyone thinking of studying at Stirling, I’d say follow the thought and see where it leads. You’ll find a warm welcome and a space to think.
