Robert Muirhead

Robert Muirhead is loving his role as a Staff Nurse in the Surgical Assessment Unit at Forth Valley Royal Hospital. Studying the BSc Adult Nursing at Stirling helped him to become a nurse after leaving the Navy.

I never wanted to be a nurse, I wanted to join the Navy. So at 17, I left school and I joined the Navy.

My step-dad was diagnosed with epilepsy and I spent a couple of years looking after him. That got me into the caring profession so I applied to the University of Stirling to do my Nursing degree. I fell in love with it and wouldn't do anything else.

I never came from a patient care background. The clinical exams help you develop a person centred approach. The course also helped me come out of my shell as I was really shy when I began the course.

My first placement was in a nursing home and that helped me develop my confidence and my communication ability. After that it was the placements were more on wards.

What I enjoy about my job is the fact that it's unpredictable. I love being hands on, I'm a hands on learner. Seeing patients get better is and able leave the hospital gives me satisfaction.

If you're going to the University of Stirling, enjoy it, have fun.
