Scots Private Law
Private law research at Stirling has played a key role in shaping the law at both domestic and international level.
Our experts have contributed to a wide range of national and international law bodies, including the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH)’s Experts’ Group on Family Agreements; the UN Convention on Rights of the Child Incorporation Advisory Group; the European Union on Brussels I and Ia, Rome I and II, Maintenance and Succession Regulations; Scottish Government Concussion Advisory Group; the Scottish Law Commission on Children’s Rights and Lease Reform; the English Law Commission on Arbitration; the UN Convention on Rights of the Child Incorporation Advisory Group; as well as funded projects AI and Law and transnational care arrangements and labour migration.
Others include the British Academy’s Childhood Policy Programme; the ‘Kilbrandon Again’ inquiry, jointly commissioned by the Children and Young People’s Commissioner for Scotland and Action for Children and the Hague Conference on Private International Law.
Our published work has been used by courts in the UK and by the Court of Justice of the European Union, the US Supreme Court (Sports Law) and other courts in many parts of the world. Senior colleagues are also involved in profession institutions, such as the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Chinese Arbitration Association, Advisory Groups and Legal Journal Editorships.
