Professor Alistair Jump
Deputy Principal (Research) and Executive Dean, Faculty of Natural Sciences
Professor Alistair Jump is the Deputy Principal (Research) and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Stirling. He joined the University in 2008 and previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences for more than four years.
Alongside his educational leadership role, he is a global change ecologist focused on understanding and predicting the impacts of environmental change on terrestrial systems and their implications for people. He has worked in forest and mountain systems across the globe and his research spans scales from the molecular level to biome distributions and incorporates methods ranging from molecular genetics to remote sensing. He has published a wide variety of academic research papers and reports for government and associated agencies.
Alistair has worked as a professional ecologist and academic since completing his PhD at the University of Sheffield in 2003. He has extensive experience in consultancy and university-private sector innovation partnership alongside seventeen years in the university sector in the UK and internationally. He works routinely with state, charity and private sector partners leading and advising research and implementation projects supporting environment, agriculture and forestry priorities. He chairs the board of trustees of the charity Treelink Stirling and leads project boards for Scotland’s International Environment Centre and the National Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Hub.
Responsibilities
Reporting directly to the Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jump is tasked with leading and driving research excellence and ambition and plays a full and key part in shaping the overall strategic direction of the University.
