Gartmorn Dam

The University of Stirling is leading an innovative project at Gartmorn Dam in Clackmannanshire to better understand and protect the environment. By combining cutting-edge satellite technology with sensors placed in the dam, researchers are monitoring the health of the water and surrounding ecosystem.

The satellites provide a “big picture” view, tracking changes in the landscape over time, while the sensors in the dam collect detailed, real-time data on water quality, temperature, and other important factors. Together, these tools help identify issues like pollution, flooding risks, or changes in biodiversity.

The project is not just about science—it’s about education too. The University is working with local schools and community groups to share what they’re learning and involve people in caring for their local environment.

The Gartmorn Dam demonstrator shows how technology, research, and education can come together to protect nature and create a more sustainable future.

This work falls under the remit of Scotland’s International Environment Centre and is funded by the Stirling and Clackmannanshire City Region Deal.
