The University of Stirling will mark this year’s International Human Rights Day on December 10 with a series of reflective panel discussions on human rights and migration.

Participants include academics and practitioners from a range of organisations, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the leading organisation within the United Nations (UN) system promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all.

The keynote address – Confronting the Violence of Borders: Reclaiming Human Rights and Dignity in Migration Governance? – will be delivered by Senior Human Rights Advisor for IOM-UN Migration, Sara Ferro Ribeiro.

Events like this create the space we need – across research, policy, and practice – to rethink how our societies can move beyond fear and build migration governance rooted in evidence, humanity, and solidarity.

Sara said: “At a time when migrants are too often portrayed through narratives of fear, crisis, or suspicion, it is vital to reaffirm a simple truth: every migrant, regardless of their journey or status, is a human being entitled to dignity and rights.

“IOM remains firmly committed to protecting those rights worldwide and to challenging the harmful rhetoric and policies that place migrants at risk.

“Events like this create the space we need – across research, policy, and practice – to rethink how our societies can move beyond fear and build migration governance rooted in evidence, humanity, and solidarity.”

The event titled Human Rights Day 2025: Migration Beyond Narratives of Fear and Crisis will be held in Lecture Theatre LTW1, Cottrell Building, from 9am.

Representatives from the British Red Cross, Just Right Scotland, Forth Valley Welcome, and the African International Humanitarian Law Initiative will also attend the event to reflect on what human rights mean for people on the move today, amid global prevailing narratives of fear and crisis.

Award-winning Yemeni artist Shatha Altowai will present a Creative Display and Discussion, No One Leaves Without a Reason. And academics from the University of Stirling, University of Glasgow and Universidad del Bío Bío will offer their expertise.
