Project

UK-Japan Collaboration on Sustainable Reconstruction in Post-conflict countries: Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and Ukraine

Funded by The Great British Sasakawa Foundation.

Collaboration with Chiba University.

The project first fosters research and exchanging insights into the UK and Japan's collaboration in sustainable reconstruction post-conflict countries, including Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and Ukraine. Second, it brings scholars and officials from both countries to address the following: How can the UK and Japan utilise their collaboration through their existing bilateral and multilateral agreements and through international organisations in sustainable reconstruction efforts in post-conflict countries? The UK and Japan have strategic partnerships such as the Hiroshima Accord (2021), an enhanced UK-Japan global strategic partnership, and partnered in post-conflict sustainable reconstruction projects such as demining ventures in Angola. Sustainable reconstruction includes rebuilding communities and infrastructure processes that are environmentally friendly, socially equitable and economically feasible. Some studies examine Japan and UK bilateral collaboration in commercial, security and diplomatic areas, such as Hemmings (2018) and Baldauff & Heng (2024). No project or study has examined the question, and the proposed project addresses it.
