Following an MA honours degree in French and Modern History at Glasgow, I undertook two years of postgraduate study as a Carnegie scholar at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris before taking up an apointment at Stirling University where I completed my doctorate. Successively, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader in French, I was Head of the University's new School of Modern Languages and Cultures before taking early retirement in 2007. I remain research active in an Honorary capacity.
One strand of my ongoing research arises from previous work on ‘sites of memory’ and identity (literary, linguistic, iconographical) in modern France, with a longstanding focus on representations of the Second World War. Alongside that, I have developed a more socio-anthropological focus on memory communities linked to diasporas of exile or migration (Spanish republicans, Pieds-Noirs, Maghrebins) in the Pyrénées-Orientales which have been the subject of several recent publications.
