About me

Richard Haynes is Professor of Media Sport in the Division of Communications, Media and Culture.

I began my academic career as a Research Assistant in the Unit for Law and Popular Culture creating one of the largest collections of football fanzines from the 1980s and 1990s. Three decades later the archive is now held by the National Football Museum and was recently used in the exhibition 'Voice of the Fans' curated by the British Library and Leeds Central Library in 2025.

After researching fanzines I completed my PhD on the relationship between television and football at the University of Strathclyde (1993-96) funded by the ESRC.

I joined the University of Stirling as Research Fellow investigating 'Men Viewing Violence' funded by the Broadcasting Standards Commission (1996-98). As a full-time member of staff in the Division of Communications, Media and Culture since 1998 I have been fortunate to complete numerous sport, media and culture research projects funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the British Academy, the Carnegie Trust, Creative Scotland, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Scottish Government. 

My latest book 'Streaming the Formula One Rivalry: Sport and the Media in the Platform Age' co-authored with Raymond Boyle was published by Peter Lang in 2024. I am now Co-Series Editor of Communications, Sport and Society for publisher Peter Lang.

I have a longstanding interest in the history of television sport and my book 'BBC Sport in Black and White' (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016) was awarded the Lord Aberdare Literary Prize in 2017 for the best sport history book of the year. I have contributed to various documentaries, radio shows and the BBC's history pages on the subject.

My principal research interests focus on the inter-relationships between sport, the media and popular culture. My work on communications and sport is widely referenced and used by students across the world. I have recently published work on: the history of sports broadcasting, sports journalism and photojournalism, sport on television, community sport heritage, the vernacular photography of sport, football heroes and heroines, football club ownership and cultural traditions, and social media in Formula 1.

I was PI on the AHRC commercialisation project ‘GOALDen Memories’ which produced 60 cultural reminiscence video packs for partner Memories Scotland. The research behind the impact activity was conducted as co-investigator on the project Generating Older Active Lives Digitally (GOALD) funded by the ESRC under the UKRI/ISCF Social Behavioural and Design Research Programme.

I lead on the evaluation of the National Lottery Heritage Fund project 'Football for All! Celebrating 600 years of football in Scotland' run by the Scottish Football Museum.

In 2022, I led my own NLHF funded heritage project “Fae Raploch To Elland Road: Remembering Billy Bremner” working with communities in Stirling and Leeds. I continue to collaborate with a group of Leeds United and Scotland fans seeking to develop a memorial to the former Scotland captain Billy Bremner in his home town of Stirling.

I am an Associate Member of the Centre for the Sciences of Place and Memory based at the University of Stirling, and currently lead on an intergenerational research project on golf, place and memory.

Since 2013 a lot of my research and public engagement activity has been focused on Scotland's sporting heritage. With the University Archivist, Karl Magee, we have worked closely with Team Scotland to conserve and publicly exhibit their collections under the banner 'Hosts and Champions'.

My work on sporting heritage has led to a number of collaborations with sport organisations and museums, most recently a digitisation project with the Bill McLaren Foundation. In 2025 I was on the advisory panel and contributed to the exhibition 'Voice of the Fans' developed by the British Library and Leeds Central Library which celebrated the creative culture of football fanzines and fan-created media.

I currently supervise seven PhD students focused on subjects ranging from the cultural histories of sport in Scotland, sport documentary, sport heritage and reminiscence, and Scottish creative industries. I currently supervise students funded by a Collaborative Doctoral Award with the Scottish Football Museum, an Applied Research Collaboration with Glasgow Caledonian University, the National Library of Scotland and the National Galleries of Scotland, and the Creative Industries Cluster funded by the University of Stirling. I welcome enquiries and applications from doctoral students interested in sport, communications and cultural heritage themes.

To support PGR students and early-career researchers I co-ordinate the Sport and Culture Research Group which meets monthly during the autumn and spring semesters and includes researchers from across different HEI's in Scotland. The Hosts and Champions exhibition was based on the Commonwealth Games Scotland archive held in the university archives. Originally part of the cultural festival for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games it became a travelling exhibition.

Blue Plaque unveiled for Billy Bremner

Following on from Professor Richard Haynes' cultural heritage project on the former Scotland captain Billy Bremner, a blue plaque marking the childhood home of Scottish and Leeds United legend was unveiled in Stirling. The memorial was commissioned by the Scottish Football Supporters Association (SFSA) in partnership with Leeds United Supporters Group, Raploch Community Council and the University of Stirling. It was officially unveiled by Eddie Gray, long time team-mate and friend of Bremner, outside 35a Weir Street, the house in which Bremner grew up on the Raploch estate. Former Scotland international Jimmy Bone, another team mate of Bremner's, was also in attendance.

‘Fae Raploch to Elland Road: Remembering Billy Bremner’ (PI, Haynes) was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund (2022). This intergenerational cultural heritage project worked with community partners in Stirling and Leeds to commemorate the early life of former Scotland international football player and captain Billy Bremner. Bremner grew up in Raploch, Stirling, in the 1940s and 50s before moving to play for Leeds United in 1959 where he is celebrated as the club’s greatest ever player. The project’s main outcomes were an online exhibition and a heritage walk developed with Dr Karen Fraser..

Advisor panel member and contributor to the exhibition Voice of the Fans which explores how football fanzines changed the beautiful game co-produced by the British Library and Leeds Libraries. Voice of the Fans invited the public to explore over 60 years of fan-made media that has defined the beautiful game.

An exhibition curated by University of Stirling experts to celebrate Scotland’s historic sporting heroes opened in Birmingham as part of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. ‘Walking in the Footsteps of Heroes’ was based on the Commonwealth Games Scotland Archive held in the University’s collections and celebrates equality, diversity and inclusion among Team Scotland’s former medal winners. Running from Wednesday 27 July 2022 at Scotland House – the home-from-home for Team Scotland at the Birmingham event – the exhibition included a timeline of Team Scotland heroes from every Games since 1930 and displayed key materials including commemorative medals, historic memorabilia and Team Scotland athletic wear. It is the third Games in which Professor Richard Haynes and University Archivist Karl Magee developed a sporting display for Scotland House, with the pair having previously travelled to the Gold Coast and Glasgow Games to present previous exhibitions.
