I am the Lead Technical Specialist for the Faculty of Natural Sciences Molecular Biology Team and am based within the Institute of Aquaculture, where I have worked since 1999. My work mainly involves RNA & DNA isolation/quantification, PCR, real-time PCR and next-generation sequencing as well as many sampling trips to the university’s Marine Environmental Research Laboratory at Machrihanish. I have recently developed an in situ hybridisation protocol which allows us to explore the site of expression of various mRNAs in sea lice and salmon tissues and have been involved in establishing protocols for the use of the Institute’s laser capture microscope. I also support the lab practical sessions in the Institute for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Previous posts have included working in the Institute’s cell culture/virology facility, research on human hepatitis “B” vaccine escape mutants (Institute of Virology, Glasgow University), on the osmoregulation of marine fish larvae (Department of Biological Sciences, Stirling University) and as an M.L.S.O. in Haematology and Blood Transfusion. I am first author on 2 publications and co-author on 21 others.
