Jennifer is a graduate of the University of Glasgow where she completed a MA (Hons) degree in Politics (2003) and later an MSc in Social Science Research (2007). Jennifer joined ISMH (previously ISM) in December 2010 from the Centre for Drug Misuse Research (CDMR) at the University of Glasgow.
Jennifer is a qualitative researcher with experience of carrying out research across various public health topics including tobacco, e-cigarettes, alcohol, illicit drug use, diet and physical activity and infant feeding.
Jennifer has been substantially involved in research into smoking cessation in pregnancy and in particular the impact of using financial incentives to encourage smoking cessation in pregnant women. She was the main researcher working on the process evaluation of the Cessation in Pregnancy Incentives Trial (CPIT), led by the University of Glasgow, a phase 3 multi centre trial of financial incentives to promote smoking cessation in pregnancy between 2017 and 2021. She also led on the process evaluation of the Financial Incentives for Preventing Postpartum return to Smoking (FIPPS) trial. Jennifer is currently studying for a PhD by publication based on her work on the CPIT III process evaluation.
More recently, Jennifer has been the main Scottish researcher for two large multi-centre UK randomised controlled trials funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). The BabyBreathe trial, led by the University of East Anglia, tested the offer of a multi-component intervention to help women who stopped smoking 12 month before or during pregnancy to remain smoke free up to a year after their baby's birth. The Assets-based feeding help Before and After Birth (ABA-feed) trial, led by the University of Birmingham, tested the offer of assets-based and woman-centred peer support for infant feeding to improve breastfeeding initiation and continuation in first time mothers.
