Dr Geoffrey Wood joined the Law School at the University of Stirling in September 2014. He is a Lecturer in Energy and Environmental Law.
Education: Geoff graduated from the Centre for Energy Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) at the University of Dundee with a PhD in Energy Law Policy and Regulation (2014), a Masters with distinction in Renewable Energy and Environmental Modelling (from the School of Engineering Physics and Mathematics at the same institution), and a BSc (Hons) in Ecological Geography and Animal Behaviour from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge.
Dr Geoffrey Wood has won a number of awards, including a Centre for Environmental Change and Human Resilience Scholarship Award and the Scottish Green Energy Award in 2009. He has also published in peer-reviewed journals, published a book on renewable energy policy in Scotland, contributed to various journals, blogs, media, parliamentary committee inquiries and consultations.
Teaching: As a member of the Law School, Geoffrey has acted as Module Coordinator and Lecturer for a number of postgraduate and undergraduate modules including Energy Law and Policy, Low Carbon Energy Law, Environmental Law, International Law and Sustainable Development, Training for Masters in the Arts & Humanities, Undergraduate Research Methods, postgraduate and undergraduate Dissertation modules, and Regulating Corporate Social Responsibility I and II. Geoff has been active in undergraduate and postgraduate supervision (MSc/LL.M/PhD).
Geoff has also worked as a Contributing Lecturer for various universities and institutions elsewhere in the UK and abroad (primarily Africa and Europe).
Geoff is very happy to supervise undergraduate, taught postgraduate and PhD projects from a diverse range of topics in energy and environmental law, policy and governance.
Geoffrey has a multi and interdisciplinary academic and professional background encompassing the international, national and sub-national level. In particular, his research involves the analysis of detailed legislation and legal cases. This involves an appreciation of the interaction between EU, UK and Scottish law across a range of disciplines and areas of law, including energy law, environmental law, public law, private law and human rights. Geoffrey's research investigates the development of legal, policy and regulatory (governance) frameworks for sustainable energy transitions in order to optimise policy delivery in terms of environmental, social, economic and technological outcomes. His research interests also include renewable/low carbon energy and fossil fuels (with a particular focus on unconventional hydrocarbons), multi-level governance, constitutional and administrative law, devolution and energy, energy-social-behavioural-environmental interactions, human rights (focused on energy and environmental issues), understanding new models of government-stakeholder partnerships in energy and environmental governance, public participation and engagement (including planning law and EIA), systems theory, sustainable development and climate change law and policy.
