Abstract
This chapter focuses on the issue of retirement from professional sport, with a particular emphasis on professional rugby. Theoretical perspectives related to athletic career termination in general are initially described. Research conducted on retirement across a range of competitive sports is then reviewed. The chapter concludes with an overview of a screening tool developed to identify professional athletes who are at-risk of experiencing career transition difficulties.
