Institute for Advanced Studies Research Clusters

The Institute for Advanced Studies PhD Clusters aim to deliver fundamentally interdisciplinary supervision and research training for the doctoral graduates of tomorrow.

In an increasingly complex world, where solving some of our worlds most pressing problems requires a combination of diverse perspectives, the biggest advances are often found where traditional disciplines interact. At the University of Stirling, our Institute for Advanced Studies clusters lead our response to this rapidly rising need for interdisciplinary PhD graduates. Clusters centre on complex problems and interdisciplinary research areas that focus on major word problems and societal needs. Each cluster includes a cross-university supervisory team and provides a rich interdisciplinary supervisory environment for projects co-created by students and supervisors working to the cluster theme.

By embedding interdisciplinarity as the norm, our Institute for Advanced Studies cluster PhD programme supports the development of the next generation of leading thinkers, creators and problem solvers, grounded in research excellence and focussed on understanding and resolving some off the major challenges that we face.
