Lecturer in Physiology and Nutrition
Sport Cottrell Building room 4V6: University of Stirling, Stirling, FK9 4LA
I graduated with BSc in Sport & Exercise Science from University of Stirling in 2012, before completing my PhD in 2016. I completed 2 years post-doctoral research with SportScotland: Scottish Institute of Sport, where my work helped GB athletes prepare for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In 2018 I joined the Faculty of Health Sciences and Sport as a Lecturer. In this role I currently contribute to the delivery of a number of modules on Sports Studies and Sport and Exercise Science undergraduate programmes, and supervise MPhil and PhD research postgraduates.
My research interests reach from elite athlete training, recovery and preparation for competition, to maintenance of muscle mass and function as contributors to healthy ageing. This work has supported Scottish athletes towards medal success at Commonwealth, European, World, and Olympic level. My teaching focuses mostly on applied exercise science and muscular/ neuromuscular systems.
My research interests focus on muscle function and motor control in relation to exercise and to healthy living:
athletic performance, preparation, and recovery;
age- and illness-related decline in muscle mass;
management of musculoskeletal pain.
In particular I am interested in the link between cognitive function and motor control across the adult lifespan; and in how elite athletes' muscles function (or fail to function) so effectively.
My recent research has helped support SportScotland athletes to prepare for and compete at major international tournaments.
I work within:
Physiology, Exercise & Nutrition Research Group and the Mobile Cognition research programme
