Academic dress

Academic dress (gown and hood) hire

If you are attending your graduation ceremony, you must wear the correct academic dress (gown and hood) for your award.

The University works with Ede and Ravenscroft to ensure that appropriate academic dress is readily available to all graduands to order and collect on campus on graduation day.

Important: If you obtain academic dress from another supplier, you must ensure that it matches the University's approved design and colour requirements. Incorrect academic dress may prevent you from participating in the ceremony.

What information will I need to complete my academic dress hire with Ede & Ravenscroft?

  • Qualification details e.g. Bachelor's, Master's, Doctorate, etc.)
  • Ceremony date and time
  • Your height and chest size
  • Debit or credit card details

How to hire my academic dress with Ede & Ravenscroft

Order your gown as early as possible to secure guaranteed availability and avoid last-minute stress on your graduation day.

Go to the Ede & Ravenscroft website to hire your gown now. You must hire your gown no later than two weeks before your ceremony. You will be required to fill out a form on the Ede & Ravenscroft website. Complete the form with these details:

  1. Institution Details - type University of Stirling.
  2. Event Details - select the date and time of your graduation ceremony from the drop down list.
  3. Award Details
    • if you are an undergraduate student, your gown will be prefixed ‘Bachelors/1st degree’. Select the appropriate degree e.g. BA, BSc, LLB or MSci.
    • Postgraduate and research students should select the award you are aiming for.
  4. You should then fill out the Academic Dress section. You will be asked to provide your height and chest size. The hood colour in the image shown when ordering may be different from the one you receive. The correct hood will automatically be selected based on your qualification and award.
  5. Hat – skip this step as mortar boards are not part of the academic dress and will not be permitted during the ceremony.
  6. To complete your purchase click on the "shopping bag" icon at the top right of the screen.
  7. On the billing address screen, you should enter the address where your bank card is registered to. This is not the address for delivery as your academic dress will be delivered to campus.

There is an issue with my order, who should I contact?

If you have any issues with your gown hire, order details, sizing or payment, please contact Ede & Ravenscroft directly.

I forgot to order my gown and hood, what should I do?

Gowns will be available to hire on the day, but at an additional cost. Arrive early (two hours before your ceremony) to arrange hire and to be fitted.

Dress code

Graduation ceremonies are a formal, ceremonial occasion and we ask that graduands and their guests dress formally for the occasion.

For graduands, a buttoned shirt or blouse is useful for securing their gown's hood. Graduands and guests are welcome to wear national, traditional or military dress if relevant. This always looks fantastic.
